Cirencester 27 - 19 Old Colstonians

This was another must win game for Cirencester at the Whiteway to continue the pressure on the teams ahead of them in Gloucestershire 1. The game started in a subdued manner with both teams probing each other’s defensive line. With the first quarter scoreless something had to give. It then did from an over thrown Ciren lineout which was pounced upon by the Colstonians back row who raced away to score under the posts. 0-7.

This shook Ciren into more intensity in their play which resulted in the returning Ciren centre Ben Ramsey, who broke tackles to score the home side’s first try. Quick to follow this up, scrum half Sam Griffiths scored with an excellent show-and-go to race away under the posts, with the conversion added by Tom Woodward. Half time score 12-7.

Ciren started the second half with greater pace not seen in the match previously which the Bristol side found hard to contain and with so much pressure, penalties resulted which enabled Ciren to kick to the corner, the resulting line-out drive saw Ciren tight head prop Darren Stephens touch down 17-7.

The home side were now playing with greater freedom, with their passes sticking, power house winger Sean Pritchard-Nash once again got on the end of a final pass to score, 22-7. Ciren scoring was completed when Ramsey completed his brace, taking the score to 27-7. To their credit OC never gave up and scored two tries of their own, bring greater respectability to the score line, which they deserved.

Said DoR Andy Deacon: “There are two league games left for us and we have it all still to play for. At the weekend we saw third place Old Cryptians beating second placed Cheltenham North, which has left us in with a chance to snatch second place. Next up we are away to Old Cryptians and North host Ross on Wye who sit in top spot. So Ciren currently in fourth we could still make the coveted second spot.”

Ciren 1XV win on the road and on 4G!

North Bristol 29 V 40 Cirencester #Gloucester1

This was new territory for Cirencester playing on a 4G pitch, and both teams had to also handle the gusty conditions. Cirencester started the game in frantic fashion without getting to grips with conditions, kicking away possession which enabled North to gain territory with wind assisted kicks, and resulted in them gaining the game’s first try 5-0. This was quickly followed up with another shortly after. Ciren were on the rack at this point, they needed to score next which they duly did through wingman Isoa Raione (Ice) 10-7. The score was only a short respite for Ciren as North again hit back with two tires from some indifferent Ciren defence 24-7. When in possession Ciren always looked dangerous but with elementary mistakes, they could not sustain any sort of pressure. With time running out in the first half hard working back row forward Will McCarthy with a great supporting running line, finished off a strong Ciren attack to score 24-12.

The score gave massive confidence to the Cotswold side who scored their third try of the half through their powerful winger Sean Pritchard-Nash who blasted his way through the midfield defence and raced under the posts, with Howell kicking the conversion, making the half time score 24-19.

Now with the wind CIren were in a determined mood to score the opening try of the second half with that man Howell dummying his way to the try line for his a brace of tries, with Ciren taking the lead for the first time 24-26. Their advantage did not last long as the North hit back with a try of their own 29-26.

The game started to break up with the fast pace of the game started to take its toll on some of the players. Ciren who had dominated the lineouts and scrum all game, gained possession from a 5m lineout drive with bulky prop Darren Stephens crashing over and Howell making the conversion 29-33.

In the closing moments of the game Tom Woodard the Ciren scrum half went through the smallest of gaps to dance around the North full back to score the game’s final try, and seal an impressive away win for the Whiteway men, in a ten try thriller 29-40.

Cirencester 1XV 20 − 24 Dursley 1XV

Cirencester 1XV 20 − 24 Dursley 1XV
#Gloucester1

Cirencester had only themselves to blame after a poor opening thirty minutes gave them too much to do against a well organised Dursley side.

Dursley started well and raced into a 16 point lead through two well taken tries and a converted penalty. Cirencester’s attitude changed on the half-hour mark with winger Sean Pritchard-Nash crossing the whitewash 5-16 at HT.

Starting the second half smartly a penalty kick from Mike Howell added a further three points with the boot following a Dursley infringement 8-16.

The away side then hit back with a penalty and an unconverted try of their own to stretch the lead to 16 points 8-24.

Ciren had lost Zeb Waite to a nasty elbow injury but they never gave up the fight and strong running from Man-of-the-Match Sean Beech and the rest of the forward pack led to captain Oli Newman scampering over for a converted score 15-24.

The home side now had the bit between their teeth, going close to scoring a number of times before eventually touching down out wide through veteran Alex Hammond. The extras were missed leaving Ciren needing a try to win the match, time was not on their side however and the final whistle sounded before they could get the winning score 20-24.

A frustrating afternoon for the Whiteway men who hope to bounce back away at North Bristol next week FT 20-24.

Cirencester sits in fourth place with just 8 points between 2nd and 4 off 3rd positions.
The push for promotion continues this weekend on the road at North Bristol.

Meanwhile on pitch 2 Cirencester 2XV posted an admirable 33-17 win against a strong, resilient Minchinhampton 2nds which pretty much secures Ciren's Gloucester DL 2 win of the season.

Thank you Waitrose Cirencester!

In January the good folk of Cirencester popped their green tokens in the Cirencester Rugby club box at Waitrose after shopping.

As part of their Community Matters programme, here is the £219 cheque presented to the club by our own Sharon Owen who is a Waitrose partner.

And smiles from the U8s and U9s who were training on Sunday morning.

New Combined Ladies Team plays at Melksham RFC

9d29ef2f f047 4f7e be6d a9cfe71ad159

It was a proud day for Cirencester Rugby yesterday when our newly formed 'Cirencester Rugby and Royal Ag Uni' Ladies team played in a friendly at Melksham RFC.

In beautiful spring weather, the girls really did themselves proud, said DoR Andy Deacon.

Although we lost it was an invaluable experience to play Melksham Ladies, who have been together for two years.

It was a great learning curve for the girls and rewarding to see the smiles on faces.

Well done to all players and the coaches.

A shout out to any ladies wanting to give rugby a try (!) or those wanting to return to the pitch, we train every Tuesday at 6.30pm at Cirencester Rugby where we have superb facilities.

Cheers, Deacs
