New Head Coach joins Cirencester Rugby

Cirencester Rugby is pleased to announce the appointment of Will Mawby as the new head coach for 2020/2021.

Following the departure at the end of the season of former Gloucester Rugby prop and Cirencester DoR Andy Deacon to Longlevens Rugby, Will has joined in the capacity of head coach to lead the senior rugby teams, and started back with the squad at training this week.

Will played last season at centre and so is a familiar face at the club with the players.

His rugby career has included a number of coaching appointments in both this country and abroad. He started coaching in New Zealand at Whanganui Collegiate school during his gap year, he then went onto coach his old school side Geelong Grammar School 1stXV in Australia whilst at home from University of Durham. He was forwards coach for Bloxham School 1stXV before joining the Army. In the Regular Army he went onto lead Regimental sides both in the Royal Signals and Royal Artillery. Following he had two successful seasons at Cumnor House School before going on to assist coaching at the RAU in 2013/14 during his MBA.

An open side flanker by trade, Will has had a varied playing career, after representing Australian Schools ‘A’ in 1998 (missing out on the main slot to Phil Waugh) he went to New Zealand to play club rugby where he was selected to play for the Whanganui Development XV. Whilst at Durham University he maintained a place in the 1stXV against stiff opposition mixing his university rugby with short spells at Gloucester U21 and then Worcester U21 before playing for Darlington Mowden Park in North Div 2 and Melbourne Rugby Club. Whilst in the Army, hampered by injury, he was able to maintain a place playing at Corps level whilst undertaking other operational and non-operational commitments. Since leaving the Regular Army in 2011, he has played rugby more socially until last season playing for Cirencester 1stXV, where he managed, remarkably, to remain (almost) injury free.

Commenting on his new role Will said: “I am delighted to be appointed as head coach at Cirencester Rugby. I had such a warm welcome last year playing, even forgiving me my love for a G&T over a pint and I think this is a real opportunity for me and the club to shape the way we play from 1stXV down and keeping this club as inclusive as possible. I keep things pretty simple coaching wise. I concentrate on the basics, set pieces, aggressive rugby and defence. Attacking comes naturally to most and actually I always feel it is best to let players play what is in front of them, playing the 15 men on the other side of the park, always respecting the opposition.”

“I also work hard on decision making. If all 15 can make the right decisions on the ball we have 15 leaders on the field, which is an empowering thing. Lastly, we all need to all enjoy our rugby when it returns. It’s been a unique start to the season and my new role but bonding at training is keeping us tight and we look forward to seeing the new regs and guidelines coming out from the RFU with regards to adapting the game structure so we can get playing again.”

Chairman Dave Reeves welcomed Will on behalf of the club and Exec Committee: “Will is a natural leader on and off the field and fits in well with the guys. The atmosphere is positive and new faces are showing up each week in pre-season.”

“Training has displayed healthy numbers for the past month or so and we are opening the clubhouse bar socially distancing and safe, in order to start building for the rugby return. During the summer the CDC has been hard at work on the new car park for the town at the entrance off the Whiteway, which will provide much needed car parking via council permits for the local business community. Will is joining at an exciting time and we look forward to watching some running rugby very soon.”

Cirencester Rugby re-opening update

This last week has seen a hive of activity at the Whiteway to prepare for the opening of the clubhouse this weekend with a well-stocked bar.

Saturday 4thJuly: 2pm – 6pm

Sunday 5thJuly: 12 noon - 2pm

At this time, we will not be serving food hot or cold, but you are welcome to bring your own food and blankets to sit in the marquee area or on the Paddock.

After the weekend we will revisit the opening hours moving forward and publish.

We have followed the Government’s explicit guidelines with regard to marked areas, one-way systems around the bar area, hand sanitisers in the clubhouse and toilets, signage and the marquee seating at 2m distances.

  • Everyone is required by law to sign in for track and trace, providing your name and telephone number in line with government guidelines and your Ciren membership card.
  • Contactless card only payment at the bar. Please note to keep the queue moving please not hang about at the bar and keep the flow moving, then everyone can get served.
  • Regular handwashing and use of the hand sanitisers are highly recommended, and the wearing of face coverings where practical.
  • You will need to queue outside as opposed to inside.
  • All seating and tables will be configured to reasonably follow social distancing 2m guidelines between members of different households or support bubbles. The sides of the marquee have been removed for ventilation.
  • We will ask you to keep appropriate distancing for the toilets and these facilities will be wiped down every hour.
  • Members with children will be responsible for supervising them at all times and should follow social distancing guidelines and keep the kiddies within your bubble.
  • There will be no facility for individuals to sit or gather inside the clubhouse at the present time. Groups of a maximum of 6 people are permitted to gather outside on the Paddock area.
  • We also have club marshalls to help manage any crowds that gather and maintain a control on the numbers. You will be kindly be asked to move if social distancing is breached in the interest of safety and comfort for members and staff.
  • We have appointed a Covid Officer to ensure compliance and carried out a risk assessment.
  • The bar staff are fully briefed on procedures to keep everyone safe. Please ensure you respect their safety as well as other club users by complying with all guidance and signage posted around the clubhouse.
  • Guidelines from the government can be viewed here: ‘Keeping workers and customers safe during Covid-19 in restaurants, pubs, bars and takeaway services’

We look forward to seeing you from a social distance, of course, and welcoming all our members back to the club.

Vacancy for Head Coach at Cirencester Rugby 2020/2021

Cirencester Rugby
Vacancy for Head Coach

Would you like to work with one of the most progressive community rugby clubs in the Cotswolds?
Could you play a vital role in its journey of growth and achievement?
Can you bring talent and commitment to this traditional yet ambitious club backed by an active senior and M&Y membership and a
growing number of sponsors?

Cirencester Rugby is looking to recruit a Head Coach to train and direct the senior teams of this long standing community club. The successful candidate will work with two Assistant Coaches.

The 1XV plays in Gloucestershire 1 and has challenged for top of the table in recent years. We are looking to build player numbers so that we can also play regular 2XV matches.

This role presents a great opportunity for either a young coach looking to build their experience and career or an established leader prepared to share their skills and expertise.
We are ideally looking for someone with a Level 2 coaching qualification, prepared to work towards their Level 3 or subsequent experience – but anyone with suitable enthusiasm and experience is welcome to apply. We are happy to invest in coach development and cover reasonable expenses.

The role may suit a player/coach.
Training takes place on a Tuesday and Thursday evening.

Ciren has a robust age-grade section from U6 to Colts. The Colts pathway is proven top senior rugby and has delivered success in recent years.
The club has close relationships with schools in the town, the Royal Agri Uni, Cirencester College and the Armed Forces barracks.
We are also looking to relaunch women’s rugby.

The Head Coach will be a member of the Executive Committee and provide the connection between the rugby department and the wider club.

- Plan and run or oversee training sessions adn set direction
- Lead team selection and contribute to the management of team affairs on match days
- Liaise with Club Captain, physiotherapist and relevant committee members to ensure both the smooth day-to-day running and longer-term development of rugby
- Assist in the recruitment of new players
- Promote the values of our club and the ethos of our sport
- Monitor players’ development and performance
- Be passionate about rugby across the club including juniors
- Be committed to player development and safety

To apply for this role, please contact Cat Hage, vice chair / digital at vicechair@crfc.co.uk or our chairman Dave Reeves on chairman@crfc.co.uk

CRFC Running Challenge Update. Day 17

After another huge weekend of running with 28 different entries and over 170km covered on Saturday alone, we have made it to Sale and have started to head back down south towards Worcester.

We are currently 76kms from Sixways which puts us just past Stafford on the M6!

We have had 41 members submit runs so far so keep this enthusiasm up, we have covered 990kms so far taking 4 days and 27 minutes, and we are only about 170kms from finishing.

Remember to donate on the Virgin Giving page to help us to try and reach that target of £500 by the time we make it back to the Whiteway.

Keep up the great work CRFC👏🏽🏃🏽
