Impressive 1XV & 2XV Wins for Cirencester

Southmead 17 v 57 Cirencester  |  #Gloucester1

In a weekend that saw Cirencester score 130 points across its first and second team wins, Cirencester 1XV travelled to Bristol to play Southmead to put right the slip last weekend and deliver a much-needed improved performance – which they did!

The Gloucester 1 game started with great pace created by the Cirencester forwards producing quality ball for the exciting backs and forward runners to benefit from. The first try was scored by the returning Whiteway scrum half Sam Griffiths who finished off a flowing move to score, with Archie Doyle adding the conversation 0-7. Ciren continued to pile on the pressure with Oli Gibson handing off players and running through others to crash over for a fine individual try 0-12. The third try was scored by the Ciren speedster Alex Moreing who raced up the wing to score 0-19.

To their credit Southmead, who were on the ropes, fought back to score their own try through their forwards 5-19. With the first half ending it was Ciren`s other winger Isoa Raione who raced away to score a try ensuring Ciren had their try bonus point before halftime. 5 – 24.

The home side faced a mountain to climb to get back in the game, which was made even more unlikely when the power house centre Ben Ramsey crashed through the heart of the home side defence to score under the post, with Doyle converting, now 5-31. With the ball once again moved wide it was that man again Raione who finished off a great move with blinding pace to score out wide, 5-38.

Southmead again showing great spirt, to score their second try of the game, which was as the first through their bulldozing forwards; 12-38. With Southmead tiring Ciren were hungry for more tries, it was the Cotswold backrower Matt Berry who scored, 12-43. Closely followed by Raione completing a fine hat trick at 12-50.

The final Ciren score went to the impressive full back Josh Woodward who picked a pass off his toes to score a well taken try, Doyle again kicked the conversion. 12-57. Doyle the Ciren blind side who was the stand in kicker, made an impression with his robust play and accurate goal kicking. FT 12-57.

Said Andy Deacon, DoR: “This final score has kept us at the top of the congested Gloucester 1 table. To win rugby games the platform must be solid, and our scrum and lineout functioned efficiently throughout the game, with the Ciren front row of Sean Beech, Scott Cannon, and Darren Stephens playing their part in this resounding victory. Well done to the squad and man of the match ‘Ice’ Raione.”

Cirencester 2XV 73-12 Chosen Hill FP 2s

A much-changed 2XV ran out at the Whiteway buoyed by recent results and return of their skipper Gareth Owen to lead the team against a Chosen Hill FP side.

From the kick off the home side started brightly executing a game plan involving hard running and support enabling them to gain early scores and not let the visitors into the game. Much of the early hard work being done by the pack with both Sean Pritchard Nash and Jack Amorogie to the fore, assisted by Olli Wagstaff at the breakdown turning over possession which was used wisely by the Ciren half backs, Andy Halsey and Mikey Howell allowing the home side to run in tries at will leading to half time score of 40 points to no reply.

The second half continued in much the same vein with a short period of the visitors coming into their own and scoring two tries (whilst down to 14 men). Following a stern discussion under the posts the Whiteway men started to put together a period of domination resulting in a number of tries and at least one moment of class with the play being stretched from one side of the field to the other through a number of hands before Steve MacFarlane crashed over under the posts.

“A great result for the 2XV and a special mention to all the younger players who turned out on the day; also to man of the match Neil Owen.”

Cirencester 0 - 41 Cheltenham North

On a bitterly cold and wet day at the Whiteway Cirencester entertained Cheltenham North who have enjoyed a steady start to their Gloucestershire 1 campaign. It was clear from the outset that the side that won the forward battle would have the greater opportunity to win the game in such testing conditions.

The early supremacy came from the Cheltenham club that set up camp in the home side’s final quarter. After a series of scrums on the Cirencester line with both sides gaining some success, North moved the ball wider and Ciren were penalised, and from the penalty a simple quick tap penalty allowed the North to score, which was converted. The rest of the half was littered with injury stoppage, and with players struggling to handle the ball resulting in numerous scrums which in turn did not allow the game to have any flow. Half time 0-7.

The second half started with renewed energy from the Cheltenham side, and from a break down the middle and Ciren in scramble defence mode Cheltenham North scored. This was compounded when the Ciren full back Zeb Waite was asked to leave the field. In truth with 30 minutes still to play the red card was the end of any chances the home side had of victory. North grasped the game by the scruff of the neck and played intelligently, manipulating positions to score with clever kicks to space left vacant by the departed full back.

Said Andy Deacon DoR: “We could not change the direction of the game, which disappointingly resulted in our first league loss of the season. After the opening five games of league success this unexpected defeat will give us a lot to think about. However, we will not panic but stick to our training regime and game plan which we know works. That said, a reaction and improvement will be required to not lose the momentum and league position gained in the opening weeks of the season.

It was not all doom and gloom in camp Ciren. The 2XV had a stunning away game beating Old Cryptians 3s 5 – 52. Well done guys and a good position to build upon in this weekend’s home fixture against Chosen Hill FP 2s.

The 1XV travel south to play Southmead #Gloucester1. The KO is 2.30pm after the clock change.
