Cirencester 41-6 Old Cryptians

Cirencester 41-6 Old Cryptians

#Gloucester1

Cirencester played their first home game in seven weeks, and knew that they had to be on top form to beat Cryptians, a side that sat above them in the league. The game kicked off in cold and wet conditions but the home side were playing as if it was a fine day, keeping the ball for multiple phases, which resulted in the game’s first try by the impressive Ciren full back Zeb Waite who sprinted over after some accurate passing. Joe Hammond had a hard angle to work with but hit a great conversion to make the score 7-0.

The away side then got themselves back into the game with two quick fire penalties, after some ill-discipline from Ciren. Once again gained control scoring next from the Cirencester centre Joe Hammond who was in great form with the boot, adding a penalty 10-6. Matt Berry was next on the score sheet for the home side with a powerful burst to the line to score 15-6. Cirencester were becoming dominant in the scrum, pushing their opponents off their scrum ball, allowing the wok horse Ciren blindside James Renowden to gather the ball and score, Joe Hammond again adding the conversion 22-6.

As the game wore on Ciren took complete control, with a dominant forward display, Darren Stephens tight head scored crashing over from close range, Hammond added the conversion. 29-6.

As the latter stages of the game approached the conditions deteriorated further but the home side continued to try and play some rugby, which resulted in the lively centre Will Armitage scoring, again Hammond kicking a great conversion. 36-6.

The final try of the game was scored by the hard-working scrum half Sam Griffiths who dummied and showing great strength crashed over. Final score 41-6. Cirencester produced some great rugby considering the conditions on the day, the performance was built on solid forward foundation with Darren Stephens having an outstanding game.

Cirencester moved up the table into 3rd just 5 points between the top three, and go to the turn of the season in a strong position.

Old Colstonians 12 – 11 Cirencester

#Gloucester1

On a windy and wet day in Bristol, Cirencester started the game with some great possession rugby, but keeping the ball and playing into the wind would prove to be a key factor. Old Colstonians kept infringing allowing Ciren to control the game in the open quarter and not scoring when having the dominance would untimely be the undoing for the Ciren side.

Key lineouts close to the home sides line were lost letting OC off the hook. Against the run of the play Colstonians broke through some weak Cirencester defending down the blind side to score the game’s opening try, which was converted 7-0,

To their credit Ciren battled on manfully into the wind adding continued pressure on the home side’s line without every breaking through the Bristolians line. For all their efforts they were rewarded with just two penalties making the half time score 7-6.

The second half became a tense affair with good defensive work from both sides. Ciren did gain a lineout 20m from the home side line, and with a great catch and drive they scored through hooker Scott Cannon who was carried over by more than half the side. With the conversion missed Ciren took the lead for the first in the match 7-11.

This galvanised the home side into action and with a line break through mid-field and Ciren in scramble defence mode, Old Colstonians moved the ball neatly along the back line to score the decisive match winning score in the corner.

Cirencester huffed and puffed but their inaccuracy yet again cost them the opportunities to gain field position and gain the win. As Ciren players left the field the feeling was that this was a game that they could and should have won.

The final league game for 2018 is this Saturday at the Whiteway against Old Cryptians KO at 2:30pm. Cirencester sits in the tight top tier of the Gloucester 1 league in 5th place with just 5 points between the top five sides.
