Match Reports: Sat 9 February 1XV & 2XV

Cheltenham North 39 v 20 Cirencester

#Gloucester1

Cirencester entered this latest Gloucestershire League One game in third position with Cheltenham North in second. It was a must win game for both sides to maintain their push for promotion. The game started with North playing with the strong wind at their backs, but it was Ciren who were on the attack to put a drop ball, which resulted in the North players racing the length of the pitch to score. There started the theme of the game for Ciren with drop balls and indecisive decision-making being part of their undoing. The North went on to score a further two tries, making the half time score 17-0.

But all was not lost for the Cotswold club as with match changing wind this time at their backs a comeback looked to be on the cards, scoring the opening points of the second half with a Scott Cannon penalty. 17-3. Another CN try was followed by a Ciren try by Tom Woodward now 24-8.

The expectation began to gain momentum, but a poor kick off receipt meant North scored their bonus point fourth try. Ciren hit straight back with a Sean Beech try, making the score 27-13. As Ciren gained momentum once again the home side always hit back, this time North charged down a defensive box kick to race over for the try. Ciren did keep working hard to get something out the game with a great team try which Zeb Waite finished off in the corner, converted by Ciren captain Oliver Newman 32-20. In the dying minutes Ciren pushed for their fourth try but with a sloppy pass in mid-field with North winger pounced on the ball and ran the length to score. This last passage of play summed up the Ciren performance. FT 39-20.

Cirencester 2XV 58 v 10 Old Cryptians 3rds

Saturday saw the 2XV resume rugby at the Whiteway after a brief break. The early exchanges saw the visitors retaining possession and camping in the home side’s 22 and testing their defence, leading to early points for the visitors. This galvanized the home side to play with some cohesion and with Rhys Watham and Mike Howells pulling strings Ciren started to gain the upper hand led by a try from veteran skipper Neil Owen among the other scorers.

Half time saw the turnaround at 20 points to 10, with the downhill slope and immediately from the kick off Cirencester ran the ball back under posts for a converted try which led to period of sustained attack with the home side turning over ball in the midfield with Eliott Thompson and Rhys Owen to the fore and free scoring at will. A fine performance against what proved to be a tough opponent on the day.

Cirencester win 19-7 v Brockworth Badgers

Cirencester 19 v 7 Brockworth

#Gloucester1

With Cirencester sitting in 3rd place in the Gloucestershire One League, and their opponents at the Whiteway sitting 3rd off the bottom, it looked like a home banker for Ciren. But with Brockworth winning their last three games, and beating 2nd place Cheltenham North the previous week, Ciren knew they had to be at their best.

The game started with the Badgers enjoying a large share of possession and gaining territory with some intelligent, probing kicks to the corner. Cirencester’s defence as it was all afternoon, was well organised, committed and determined not to let their opponent through. Once Ciren gained the ball they looked dangerous and this was proven when the muscular Ciren second row Luke Uzzell barged his way past defenders and with players on his back crashed over to open the scoring for Cirencester 5-0.

With this score Ciren gained confidence which saw them play with more continuity, resulting in their second try of the half scored by Ryan Brookes, who was on the end of several great off loads to score under the posts. Scott Cannon added the conversion 12-0. The first half was ended with an argument, which spilled off the pitch and resulted in two yellow cards.

With both sides now down to 14 men it was the away side that coped better dominating possession with their aggressive forwards and making in roads into the defensive line of Ciren. However the home side were in no mood to lie down, but with so much ball Brockworth did score their try 12-5.

Once more Ciren hit back after a knock on by Brockworth in the in-goal area from a penalty, a five-metre scrum was awarded and as for much of the game Ciren drove the scrum forward resulting in a penalty try 19-5.

In the latter stages of the game both sides worked hard to score the next try which was not to be. Final score 19-5. A well deserved win for Cirencester, with forwards and joint men of the match Will McCarthy and James Renowden putting in a massive effort.

Next weekend is a gap in the Gloucester 1 league however the 2XV has a friendly with Longlevens 2s before the Six Nations IRE v ENG game.

Bredon Star 3–48 Ciren 1XV | Ciren 2XV 40-14 Drybrook 3s

Bredon Star 3 – 48 Cirencester

#Gloucester1

Cirencester travelled to Bredon Star in a confident mood after inflicting a heavy defeat on the Worcestershire side earlier in the season. Bredon Star started the game in a bullish mood with their forwards driving forward with strong one out runners, but with inaccuracies close to the line they never troubled the score. Once Cirencester had some quick ball, they started to apply pressure breaking the defensive line at will. Ciren’s first try was scored by prop Darren Stephens who showed great pace to find the try line. This was followed in quick time with the Ciren winger Tom Grainger-Williams who slipped through a tiny gap to score, the conversion was kicked by hooker Scott Cannon, who had the tee for the first time this season.

The away side third try was scored by centre Zeb Waite who beat defenders at will with power and quick feet; the conversion was again added by Cannon. Next to score was Isoa Raceva (Ice); the full back was in great form finishing off a great try, by now Cannon had his eye in and completed his hattrick of conversions 0-26. The last try of the half went to Cannon, this time he could not add to his try with the conversion. As half time approached a penalty kick for Star made the score 3-31.

The second half started with both sides spilling the ball, making for a disjointed half. Cirencester were also conceding penalties, which enabled the home side to enjoy some territory, but as in the first half the Ciren defence held firm.

Ciren did manage to score three further tries through second row Luke Uzzell, wingers Tom Woodward and Isoa Raceva who grabbed his second and the best try of the day.

The final score concluded at 3-48 where Cirencester scored eight tries on the day. Said Andy Deacon DoR: “We know our performance on the day had a lot room for improvement but took the bonus point and moved into third position in the league which is tight in the top tier.”

Cirencester 2XV enjoyed another fine home win in their ten game winning streak against Drybrook 3rds 40-14 and sit comfortably in pole position in the Gloucestershire DL league.

This weekend the 1XV welcome Brockworth RFC (the Badgers) and the 2XV travel to play Cheltenham Saracens 2s.

Ross on Wye 27 v 14 Cirencester

#Gloucester1

Cirencester knew ahead of the game that they had it all to do in playing top of the table Ross on Wye who have not lost at home for 2 years. Their optimism was tested early by the home side kicking a penalty 3-0. This shook Cirencester into action as they dominated possession and territory, but Ciren were often wasteful when in possession and not taking their chances when they arose.

Finally, after further pressure the away side got on the score sheet with a try from Matt Berry the Ciren open side bursting over to score the much-deserved try, and Joe Hammond adding the conversion.

Cirencester were defending with great tenacity, showing great spirit and fight. Sometimes their eagerness resulted in penalties, and Ross were awarded their second penalty of the game, 6-7. Ciren once again came surging back with a big forward drive, which the hard-working Ciren prop Gareth Owen broke from to score a very well taken try, with Hammond adding the conversion 6-14.

As the first half came to a close Ross gained field position with a kick to the corner, and with a well worked front peel from the line-out they scored their first try of the game, in the 52nd minute of the first half, making the half time score 13-14.

The second half was no less intense with both sides determined to gain the vital win. But with a second yellow card shown, with a player down Ciren become under increased pressure, which resulted in a converted Ross try 20-14. Ciren now had to dig deep which they duly did with the impressive Ciren eight Alex Hammond cutting a great line from a flat Oli Newman pass to score under the posts, which the referee judged to be forward and no try given. Late on, with Ciren chasing the game, a spilled pass allowed Ross to score their third try. The Cotswold club did deserve something from the game in which they contributed so much.

Hucclecote 2s 7– 36 Cirencester 2XV

Cirencester 2XV travelled away to Hucclecote for the first game of the New Year.

Buoyed by recent results and good numbers they were able to ensure the fixture went ahead by loaning two players from the start of the game and further one once play had started, a big hand to Rich Williams, Tim Woodley and Olli Wagstaff for stepping up to the plate.

Straight from the kick off Hucclecote turned over the ball and started to use their big forwards try and break the Cirencester line leading to early try putting the hosts into seven point lead. However following some sharp words from skipper Neil Owen, the visitors started to take control of possession and worked down field to restore the score to 7 all.

In this second string fixture scrummaging was to the forefront of the game with lots of handling errors from both sides and neither really putting together any continuity. As the game continued it became clear that when the Red & Black controlled the ball they were the fitter side and tries continued to flow throughout the game.

The six tries were scored by Andy Halsey (2), Rhys Owen (2), Andrew Field and Steve Macfarlane.

A great result considering the pre-Christmas break the side now look towards the challenge of continuing their winning run throughout the rest of the year.
