Thank you Waitrose Cirencester!

In January the good folk of Cirencester popped their green tokens in the Cirencester Rugby club box at Waitrose after shopping.

As part of their Community Matters programme, here is the £219 cheque presented to the club by our own Sharon Owen who is a Waitrose partner.

And smiles from the U8s and U9s who were training on Sunday morning.

New Combined Ladies Team plays at Melksham RFC

It was a proud day for Cirencester Rugby yesterday when our newly formed 'Cirencester Rugby and Royal Ag Uni' Ladies team played in a friendly at Melksham RFC.

In beautiful spring weather, the girls really did themselves proud, said DoR Andy Deacon.

Although we lost it was an invaluable experience to play Melksham Ladies, who have been together for two years.

It was a great learning curve for the girls and rewarding to see the smiles on faces.

Well done to all players and the coaches.

A shout out to any ladies wanting to give rugby a try (!) or those wanting to return to the pitch, we train every Tuesday at 6.30pm at Cirencester Rugby where we have superb facilities.

Cheers, Deacs

Cirencester posts 82-0 win v Southmead

Cirencester 82 v 0 Southmead #Gloucester1

With Southmead bottom of the table, and Cirencester looking to bounce back from the disappointing loss to Cheltenham North the previous week, Ciren did start as hot favourites to win and get five points. The early exchanges indicated the home side would indeed gain the points they desperately required to keep them in the promotion hunt. Early tries through Luke Uzzell and Sam Griffiths settled the nerves, the reality was Ciren were in complete control with the Bristol side struggling to keep pace with Ciren who were moving the ball well through both the backs and forwards.

As half time approached it was clear Cirencester were going to win, the second half saw Southmead tire enabling the powerful Ciren full back Zeb Waite to complete his hattrick, and not to be out done Tom Grainger-Williams, the lightening Ciren winger weighed in with a hattrick of his own; also his wing partner Sean Pritchard-Nash with big runs scored a well-deserved brace.

The final score of 82-0 was the best result for Cirencester to date, once again giving them momentum as they enter in the final quarter of the season. With Cheltenham North losing to Dursley it moves Ciren within 5 points of second place and the push for promotion.

The next game for Ciren is in fact against Dursley at the Whiteway, which presents a stern challenge for the Whiteway men as in recent seasons Dursley has very much had the upper hand on their rivals. Both Cirencester 1XV and 2XV teams have it all to play for with the 2nd team in top spot in their Gloucester District 2 league, being a game away from gaining promotion.

Chosen Hill FP 2nds 17 v 25 Cirencester 2XV

The game started with CIren camping themselves in Chosen’s 22 area and not allowing the home side to gain any momentum or escape from their own half, in the end pressure told and from a dominant scrum the ball was moved wide for a try to be scored. Half time saw Ciren in front but having to work hard for their dominance.

The second half saw the game get even tighter with Chosen Hill applying a large amount of pressure with only stout work in defence from Halsey and Owen in the centres kept the visitors in front. Finally breaking out through midfield Cirencester gained further momentum and scored, and keeping the up the pressure led to penalties being conceded by the home side in front of the posts to allow Harman the chance to stretch the score.

A late surge from Chosen saw them score in the corner on the stroke of the final whistle to see Cirencester win again 25 – 17. Among the try scorers were Jack Amorogie, Rhys Owen, Andy Halsey. A special mention to Steve Langley and Mark Vaughan for putting fine performances in the front row having not played a great deal of rugby this year.

Well to both teams.

Match Reports: Sat 9 February 1XV & 2XV

Cheltenham North 39 v 20 Cirencester

#Gloucester1

Cirencester entered this latest Gloucestershire League One game in third position with Cheltenham North in second. It was a must win game for both sides to maintain their push for promotion. The game started with North playing with the strong wind at their backs, but it was Ciren who were on the attack to put a drop ball, which resulted in the North players racing the length of the pitch to score. There started the theme of the game for Ciren with drop balls and indecisive decision-making being part of their undoing. The North went on to score a further two tries, making the half time score 17-0.

But all was not lost for the Cotswold club as with match changing wind this time at their backs a comeback looked to be on the cards, scoring the opening points of the second half with a Scott Cannon penalty. 17-3. Another CN try was followed by a Ciren try by Tom Woodward now 24-8.

The expectation began to gain momentum, but a poor kick off receipt meant North scored their bonus point fourth try. Ciren hit straight back with a Sean Beech try, making the score 27-13. As Ciren gained momentum once again the home side always hit back, this time North charged down a defensive box kick to race over for the try. Ciren did keep working hard to get something out the game with a great team try which Zeb Waite finished off in the corner, converted by Ciren captain Oliver Newman 32-20. In the dying minutes Ciren pushed for their fourth try but with a sloppy pass in mid-field with North winger pounced on the ball and ran the length to score. This last passage of play summed up the Ciren performance. FT 39-20.

Cirencester 2XV 58 v 10 Old Cryptians 3rds

Saturday saw the 2XV resume rugby at the Whiteway after a brief break. The early exchanges saw the visitors retaining possession and camping in the home side’s 22 and testing their defence, leading to early points for the visitors. This galvanized the home side to play with some cohesion and with Rhys Watham and Mike Howells pulling strings Ciren started to gain the upper hand led by a try from veteran skipper Neil Owen among the other scorers.

Half time saw the turnaround at 20 points to 10, with the downhill slope and immediately from the kick off Cirencester ran the ball back under posts for a converted try which led to period of sustained attack with the home side turning over ball in the midfield with Eliott Thompson and Rhys Owen to the fore and free scoring at will. A fine performance against what proved to be a tough opponent on the day.
