Cirencester Rugby Hosts Country’s Longest Running
7s Youth Tournament 2019

-- Guest appearance: Henry Trinder ---

Sunday 5th May, The Whiteway, Cirencester

This Sunday over 400 boys and girls, aged 11 to U18 Colts, are taking part in the 42nd annual 7s tournament at Cirencester Rugby.

The hugely anticipated event has attracted teams from across the county and beyond, including Bath, Bishopstone, Bromyard, Cirencester, Cheltenham Saracens, Chippenham, Chosen Hill, Dings Crusaders, Dursley, Fairford, Grove, Ledbury, Stow and Supermarine.

The tournament is believed to be the longest running, competition of its kind in the country! A traditional event in the Cirencester Rugby calendar and organised by Mike Timbrell, club Treasurer.

A guest appearance sees Gloucester Rugby and ex-Cirencester youth player, Henry Trinder present a selection of awards and trophies around noon / 12.30 to the morning winners.

Commenting on the Youth 7s Mike said: “We are thrilled with the uptake and registration this year where we are putting on a day of 7s rugby for around 8 age groups. Thanks also to the M&J volunteers who are helping to run the day, their support is essential for us to put on such an event of this size, providing refreshments for all visitors. The festival celebrates the end of the season and delivers a friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.”

Staging such competitions is not possible without the support of local businesses and Cirencester thanks to Soldi Building Investments, Alexcars, Property Pathfinder, Seagar Welding and Tanners Solicitors for their generous support.

Last year the main and oldest tournament trophy, the U18/Colts Hugh Evans Memorial Shield, was won by Bath U18s, with Cirencester runners-up. The Bevan Bridges player’s cup was won by Cirencester’s Tom Woodward.

The first matches start at 9.00am with the closing awards and presentations around 4.30pm. The clubhouse and bar is open all day for refreshments and a BBQ is serving food and all are welcome to enjoy the Bank Holiday festivities at the Whiteway.

S&D Combination Cup Final Ciren 22-42 Dursley

Cirencester 22-42 Dursley

Cirencester entered their last game of the season in good heart after beating Old Elizabethans in the previous week by 50 points. This week was the final of the Stroud and District Combination Cup, being played at Painswick. With a beautiful sunny day, the conditions were perfect for some entertaining running rugby.

From the start it was clear Dursley were going to use their powerful forwards to gain field position, gaining turn overs and penalties from scrums to heap pressure on the Whiteway side. The game started at break neck speed with both sides spilling ball at crucial times. It was Dursley who went into a commanding eleven nil lead, putting them in the driving seat and at this point in control. Ciren did hit back playing high tempo rugby with some great off loading, and back row forward Ryan Brookes to the fore.

Two well taken tries one from Ciren winger Tom Grainger-Williams after a spectacular pass from fly half Iwan Thomas putting the flying winger away to score, with the out wide conversion added by Thomas and suddenly the Cotswold club found themselves in front. This is how it stayed until half time.

With Ciren now going down the slope hopes were high that they could gain further momentum at the start of the second half. This would not be the case as Dursley scored first, with a slick back line movement, this was quickly followed by their second of this half; Ciren had to stop the scoring spree which they did with a Thomas penalty, but once again Dursley immediately hit back with their fifth try of the game.

Ciren did not stop attacking, which was rewarded by their third try, scored by full back Isoa Raione. Dursley’s forwards were in no mood to let the victory slip and with two lineout drives to score the victory; the Cup was deservedly theirs for a fifth season in a row. Ciren will rue the fact they spilled the ball to many times when in an encouraging position, coupled this with a scrum that was under pressure all day long nullified their attacking options.

Old Cryptians 24 v 17 Cirencester #Gloucester1

Details
Last Updated: 09 April 2019

With both sides pushing for promotion, this was like a cup final with the loser being out of contention to gain the much-coveted second position in Gloucestershire One. Good conditions were set for the afternoon and a large crowd gathered in anticipation of an entertaining encounter, with both sides committed to running rugby.

The opening minutes saw the home side put pace on the ball, moving the point of attack and asking questions of the Ciren defence who were defending with great courage. With Cryptians playing down the slope, Ciren were finding it hard to find a way out of their own half, and when they did, they gave the ball away in the home side territory, letting the Gloucester side back into the game.

The first try went the way of the home side with a powerful run to the line. Ciren had to score to gain a foothold in the game, and this came from the boot of Ciren full back Mike Howell who kicked a well struck penalty. With OC enjoying the lion’s share of possession, the Ciren backrow comprising James Renowden, Will MacCarthy and Alex Hammond were working overtime in defence to thwart the advances. From a quick tap penalty Old Cryptians did race away to score the home side second try, which was again converted 14-3.

At this stage Ciren had to stay in the game, but retaining the ball was a difficulty for the Cotswold club, and with any scrap ball the Tuffley side’s speedy backs capitalised, resulting in the best try of the game scored in the corner, making the half time score 19-3.

To have any chance to secure the victory, Ciren had to score first in the second half. True to the script they did just that through a penalty try after the home side were penalised at scrum time. At this stage OC had two players in the sin bin, after a deliberate knock on and a late tackle. Ciren were now playing like a side who could sense a comeback was on, which it was after a great pass from Ciren skipper Oliver Newman who found the impressive centre Matt Berry to score; converted by Mike Howell. Now it was game on at 19-17 with fifteen minutes to play.

Both sides were nullifying each other with some great defensive sets, helped by some indifferent skills, and decisions from both sides. From a Cryptians line-out drive, Ciren defence straying off side, and from the resulting penalty the Cryptians once again crashed over to score their fourth try, and the win 24-17. Ciren will rue the opportunities they had to score which were not taken and which they needed in such a tight game. With all Ciren players putting in a lot of effort, and to come away with a losing BP was hard to take.

The Cirencester 2XV fixture v Old Pats 3rds was cancelled by the opposition. Thanks for supporting the 1XV in return.

Well done guys on winning the District 2 League. A fantastic season.
